Our non-contact boxing program is designed for people living with neurological conditions, including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and stroke.

Our team of experienced exercise physiologists understand the diverse range of neurological conditions. We’re here to guide and support you throughout this beginner-friendly program.

Plus Boxing is a 4-week program run by MS Plus exercise physiologists at our Lidcombe (NSW) and Footscray (Vic) Wellbeing centres.

Benefits of boxing for neurological health

Research has shown that exercise plays an important role in managing neurological conditions. Exercises that include big, explosive movements (such as boxing) along with strength training can help rewire the brain to improve symptoms including spasticity or stiffness, weakness, reduced balance and control, ataxia and fatigue

Exercise Physiologist-led program

Our boxing for neurological conditions program is run by MS Plus exercise physiologists at our Lidcombe (NSW) and Footscray (Vic) Wellbeing centres. Book in for an assessment with one of our friendly team to determine your suitability for participation in our boxing class!

This program will help you:

  • Improve your coordination, strength, balance, aerobic fitness, flexibility and overall wellbeing
  • Build confidence in dual-task walking
  • Reduce the risk of fall and injury
  • Increase your independence and quality of life
  • Connect with others and have fun!

Over 4 weeks we will:

  • Perform an initial assessment to form a benchmark and reassess at the conclusion of the program
  • Develop introductory boxing skills (weeks1-2)
  • Build on boxing technique and drills(weeks 2-4)

FAQs

Who is this program suitable for?

This program is designed for people with neurological conditions with the ability to mobilise with a walking stick or less (i.e. no walking aids like walkers).

Do I need prior boxing experience to participate?

All fitness levels are welcome. No prior boxing experience is required as we start our program at a beginner level.

How many people can I expect in a session?

We limit each program intake to 3 people to allow for a personalised experience.

What is the duration of each session?

1.5 hours.

When does the program commence?

The next round commences in September. We will get in touch with all participants to book in an initial assessment prior to the first session.

What is the structure and cost of the program?

The total program consists of 86 sessions:

  • 1 x initial assessment
  • 4 x small group boxing sessions
  • 1 x final assessment.

How can I pay for the Boxing for Parkinson's?

There are several ways to pay for this service, including:

  • NDIS funding
  • My Aged Care funding
  • private health insurance
  • paying privately with a potential Medicare rebate.
