Occupational therapy (OT) can help you with the everyday activities you find challenging. Whether it’s for fun, work or self-care – you can and should continue doing what matters to you, safely.

Our occupational therapists are problem solvers and can suggest practical strategies, assistive technology and home modifications to address your symptoms, so you can overcome any challenges and live a meaningful life.

How you can benefit from occupational therapy

Occupational therapy can benefit people living with MS and other neurological conditions in many ways. It can help you:

  • get around your home and community more easily and safely
  • manage fatigue
  • transfer in and out of bed, chairs, shower or bath
  • live independently in everyday life
  • engage positively in your family, work and social life.

How our occupational therapists can help you

There are many ways to make living with MS and other neurological conditions easier. We’ll tailor your plan to your needs. This can include:

  • a cooling vest so your MS symptoms don’t worsen due to heat
  • a bathroom rail and fixed seat so you can shower independently and safely
  • a diary to track your fatigue and help you be more productive at work
  • customised paint brushes if you want to start a new creative hobby
  • a hoist to help you get out of bed in the morning
  • a wheelchair or electric scooter to help you move around easily.

You will come away from your first appointment with a list of recommendations and we’ll be there to help you through the next steps.

How our occupational therapy works

You’ll be matched to one of our occupational therapists, and in your first appointment, we will:

  • work with you to understand what activities are important to you
  • suggest practical strategies to overcome any challenges
  • give you a list of recommendations
  • provide referrals for equipment or home modifications if needed.

How to access our occupational therapy

We have occupational therapists across the ACT, NSW, Tasmania and Victoria.

Depending on where you live, we can:

  • visit you in your home
  • see you face-to-face at one of our MS Plus wellbeing centres
  • have a telehealth session with you via video call or over the phone

How do I pay for occupational therapy?

There are several ways to pay for this service, including:

  • NDIS funding
  • My Aged Care funding
  • private health insurance
  • paying privately with a potential Medicare rebate.

We can help you work out the most suitable payment method when you book your appointment.
