Physiotherapy keeps you moving to ensure better health and wellbeing, but more than that, it also focuses on symptom management and helps you work on your mobility, strength and balance.

Our team of MS physios specialise in helping people with neurological conditions, so we understand your challenges and how to help.

The team includes physiotherapists Mahenddra Jonathan Raj, Dr Phu Hoang, Jennifer Pietersz and Vanessa Leung.

Phu, our longest serving physio, has been with MS Plus for an incredible 23 years.

‘I wanted to become a physiotherapist upon landing in Australia from Vietnam in 1995 because I realise that a physiotherapist can help treat a range of conditions that orthodox medicine cannot.’ - Dr Phu

Jennifer has been a physio for eight years and says seeing her clients achieve their goals is what keeps her motivated each day.

‘I have more than one patient who has gone from not feeling comfortable walking without an aid in their home to walking more than one kilometre for exercise in the community. Changes in MS are gradual and improvements are always to be celebrated. I am very proud of my clients’ achievements.’ - Jennifer

Physiotherapy can be particularly beneficial for people with MS and other neurological conditions and can prevent some symptoms – such as fatigue and mobility issues – from worsening over time.

‘MS affects the nerves of the body which can lead to muscular weakness, reduced balance and poor coordination. Physiotherapy is important to make sure that the right muscles are strengthened, and strategies are implemented early to help reduce the effects of this condition. Physiotherapists can also help to recommend custom-made braces, assistive devices and walking aids to make daily tasks easier,’ says our newest recruit, Vanessa, who has six years’ experience in the field.

Why should someone with a neurological condition try physio?

‘Physiotherapy provides a way for people with a neurological condition to exert control over their diagnosis,’ says Mahenddra, who has been practicing for nine years.

‘Being a physiotherapist for people with neurological conditions is both challenging and rewarding, as each person has their own unique story and circumstances. I recently enjoyed working with a patient with Parkinson’s, where we were able to modify and progress her exercises to suit her changing condition.’
