A Door Between Worlds

Water color, markers and fine liner pen

My piece, A Door Between Worlds, is a mixed-media watercolour and ink work inspired by my aunt and other young women living with multiple sclerosis (MS). At its centre is a girl with her eyes closed, her expression calm and soft. On the outside, she appears quiet, almost unassuming, like how many people with MS carry their struggles gently, without drawing attention. But inside her mind, I’ve painted a whole universe of colour and life. In her head, there are stars, a crescent moon, flowers, and floating notes with small, kind words: “breathe,” “believe in yourself,” and “keep going.” At the heart of it all is an open door, and through it, a small figure stands. This door is the bridge between the two worlds I’ve observed—the visible world, where they might look tired or quiet, and their inner world, full of hopes, dreams, and quiet resilience. I’ve seen how MS can affect more than just the body. My aunt and the other women I’ve met carry a quiet tiredness, but also a kind of soft, unshakable strength. Their expressions hold both fragility and courage at once, and that contrast is what I wanted to capture here. The flowers, stars, and gentle colours aren’t just decoration—they represent the richness of their inner lives, the parts that keep growing even when life feels unpredictable or overwhelming. The floating notes are messages I wish I could give them, the kind of quiet encouragement they might not always hear. I used watercolour to keep the feeling soft and dreamlike, letting colours bleed into each other like thoughts, and added ink lines to hold the shape and structure. It’s a balance between fluid emotion and steady strength, just like the people this piece is about. This artwork isn’t only about MS. It’s about living between two worlds: the one others see, and the one you carry inside. It’s about the door that connects them, and the quiet, steady growth that continues even when things feel unsteady.
