Fossil Fuel Relic

David Forsyth

2026
Mixed media. Including old wares & farm machinery deconstructed & reusable into the components used . Yacht fittings & copper plumbing , recycled timber & things found along the coast.

I’ve always wanted to have a go at making a ship as I’ve spent a lot of time collecting old wares that were used in the construction along with recycled timber collected over the years.
Having spent my life enjoying the coast & more recently living on the Mornington Peninsula, I was inspired by my time watching ships coming & going from the bay & out the heads towards the open ocean.
As a boy I used to love making models, glueing them together, putting on the stickers & paint . They were mostly battle ships & I guess I grew up with some fond memories of playing with friends & floating various ships & boats done the creek that we lived near.
Today I enjoy working with timber, including a lot of driftwood collected over the years when I was more mobile.
Additionally I was training as a jewellery artist before my MS so was skilled in working with metal.
I just love doing this project as it brought together all of my passions , the ocean, woodworking & jewellery.
The photos were taken on the Sorrento Pier, incorporating my joy of photography.
I hope people enjoy this piece as much as I did making it!
