Building connections across generations: Regan’s volunteer journey

When Regan Longfield discovered MS Plus’ Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme, it perfectly aligned with his two volunteering goals: to support older Australians while giving back to the community.

The program, funded by the Australian Government, provides companionship for older people living in aged care homes or in their own homes with a Support at Home Package.

“I joined the program in around 2019 and got matched up with a gentleman in an aged care facility. I used that opportunity to start up friendships and really tackle the loneliness epidemic we have with many of our older Australians,” says Regan.

“The support can vary from helping somebody in a chair or a bed change their physical environment, through to just having a coffee and chatting about a mutual interest. These types of connections are important as a lot of these people may not have many visitors anymore,” he explains.

Regan is currently matched with a participant who he’s been friends with for over three years now. Their catch ups have become part of his weekend routine.

“Going to see him is a great way to start my Saturday morning – it brings him that connection as well as giving us each someone of a different generation to bond with.

“I really value the input, the personality, the stories and everything that our older Australians can give, and particularly in spaces where they may be isolated. I get a lot of out of just being a friend to them, and them being a friend back to me.”

Before starting his volunteer role, Regan knew a bit about MS Plus through some family friends.

“Through this scheme I’ve definitely learned more and gotten to know not only the people I’ve been matched with but also MS Plus as an organisation.”

In October, Regan will run the Melbourne Marathon with MS Plus as his chosen charity partner.

“Seeing MS Plus was one of the charity partners was a perfect fit for me and my passion for the scheme I'm involved in. I really wanted to utilise the vehicle of training and running the Marathon to raise funds for MS Plus and the great work that the organisation does.

“It really gives me a boost when someone's donating towards the cause, it helps me keep my motivation.”
